Continue to digitize an existing map
You must make sure that the digitizer works in Run mode, uses No Increment, No Prompt, a Date Rate of about 20 points per second, a certain Resolution, will send information in ASCII format, etc. While configuring the tablet, write the settings down you used for Resolution (lines per inch or per mm), Baud Rate, Data Bits, and Parity. For more information, refer to your digitizer manual.
The Setup Digitizer command on the File menu of the Main window will now be preceded by a check mark .
If necessary, change these port settings so that the port settings are exactly the same as used during the configuration of the digitizer tablet. Then, click the Next button.
When you have communication between your digitizer and the port, you should now see coordinates as readable numbers that change when you move the digitizer mouse on the digitizer tablet.
If so, follow the instructions on this page for automatic setup and press digitizer cursor buttons 0, 1, 2, 3.
If not, check the setup of the digitizer tablet itself, go back to the Digitizer Set Up - Select Port page and make the settings equal to the digitizer settings until you have communication.
In the upper left part of this page: check if all buttons work, and check whether the X-values increase by moving the digitizer cursor to the right, and Y-values increase by moving the cursor up.
Then, fill out the resolution used by the tablet (lines per mm or per inch), and the size of the tablet (mm or inches). Subsequently, check the feedback in the upper right part of the page.
When everything is correct, you can click the Finish button.
The Setup Digitizer command on the File menu of the Main window will now be preceded by a check mark .
To establish a relation between digitizer coordinates and map coordinates, you have to do a Map Reference.
Select a coordinate system or create one using the little create button , and choose for metric coordinates or geographic coordinates.
Do the following:
(map coordinates should fall inside the selected coordinate system of step 3),
Also check the feedback values for Sigma and Scale (of the map).
The Map Reference command on the File menu of the Main window will now be preceded by a check mark .
Map reference settings are stored even when you switch your computer off. When you continue digitizing later on, and when the map is still at the same position on the digitizing tablet, you do not need to reference your map again.
With the digitizer, you can add points to a point map and add segments to a segment map. You can also delete points or segments, rename points or segments, and move points or move intermediate points within a segment.
In the Create Point Map or the Create Segment Map dialog box:
Tip: To obtain a polygon map, you first have to digitize segments, then check the segments and polygonize them, see also How to create polygon maps.
The Digitizer, Active command on the File menu of the editor will then be preceded by a check mark .
You can now start digitizing your map.
