ILWIS objects
Service objects
Service objects are used by data objects; they contain accessories required by data objects besides the data itself. Service objects define, for example, the valid type of values for a data object (ID, Classes, Values), the colors assigned to the data, and, coordinate information for the data object.
Service objects are:
Service objects can be selected to serve one or more data objects, created, changed, etc. through the properties dialog box of a data object or another service object. For more information, see Appendices : Relations between ILWIS objects.
In ILWIS 3, object names comply with Windows long file names.
- In object names, any character may be used except \ / : * ? < > | "
- The maximum length of an object name is 255 characters including the full path.
Furthermore, it is not allowed to use % in any ILWIS object name.
In dialog boxes, long object names can be used freely.
On the command line and in scripts however, object names must be enclosed by single quotes e.g. 'My Object'.ext when the object name:
- starts with a digit from 0 to 9,
- starts with or contains one or more spaces, or
- starts with or contains any of the following special characters ` ~ ! @ # $ ^ & ( ) - + = [ ] { } ; ' , .
See also How to use long object names.
Furthermore, in ILWIS 3, Universal Naming Convention (UNC) paths are supported. A UNC path starts with \\ServerName\... rather than with DriveLetter:\...
Tips:
- To hide or show certain object types from a Catalog, use the Catalog - Show command, Object Selection toolbar or the Customize Catalog, Object Selection tab.
- It is advised to use the same service objects for several data objects:
- if you have several thematic maps with the same kind of class names (not every class has to exist in each map), you should use the same domain for all maps,
- if you have several raster maps of the same study area, you should use the same georeference for all maps.
- To copy, rename or delete ILWIS objects, you MUST use ILWIS commands.
- To copy or to rename a single object: select an object and choose the Copy Object To command.
- To copy one or more objects: select the object(s) and use drag and drop, or select the object(s) and choose the Copy command and then the Paste command.
- To delete one or more objects: select the object(s) and choose the Delete command.
For more information, see How to copy objects or How to delete objects.
- Mind: It is strongly discouraged to copy, rename or delete files using Windows Explorer or DOS.
