Map views

A map view is a saved map window.

In one map window, you can display:

When you save a map window as a map view, all layers in the map window and their display settings as well as the georeference of the map window are stored. When you open a map view later on, the map window will appear exactly as it was saved. You do not need to add individual maps to the map window anymore, nor specify their display options.

Map views MUST be created when you wish to print maps. After saving the map window(s) as map view(s), create a layout to which you can add one or more map views and additional annotation such as legends, north arrows, scale bars and scale texts, texts, map borders including ticks and coordinates for grid lines or a graticule, a page border, boxes, bitmaps and pictures.

Mind: In a layout, a map view may only contain one raster map.

In the layout editor, you can then make a final composition of the map views and the annotation.

Names of map views:

In ILWIS 3, object names comply with Windows long file names. Also Universal Naming Convention (UNC) paths are supported. For more information, see How to use long object names.

To create a map view:

Display the required data layers, annotation text layers, grid lines, and/or graticule(s) in a map window. Then, from the File menu in the map window, select the Save View or the Save View As command. You can also click the Save button in the toolbar of the map window. When a map window has not been saved before, the Save View As dialog box will appear.

To create a layout, you can choose the Create Layout command from the File menu in the map window. If the contents of the map window still need to be saved as a map view, you will be asked to do so. Then, a small dialog box will appear in which you can specify a scale for the map view in the layout: the layout editor will be opened displaying the map view on the specified scale.

For more information, see also Layout editor : functionality.

Note:

Map views that use a coordinate system of type latlon, cannot be properly displayed nor printed in a layout. It is advised:

To display a map view:

The easiest way to display a map view is to double-click it in a Catalog. All layers stored by the map view will be directly displayed in a map window.

To edit a map view:

Open a map view, and add or remove layers or edit display options of layers. Then, save the map window again as a map view either using the Save View or Save View As commands or by clicking the Save button.

For more information, see also How to use layers in a map window or Map window : Layer Management.

Map views can also be edited and saved from within the layout editor. For more information, see Layout editor : functionality.

Operations on map views:

On a map view, no operations can be performed. When a map view is displayed, you can copy the map view as a picture to clipboard and paste it into another Windows application (see Map window : Copy to clipboard). When one or more map views are inserted in a layout, you can add annotation such as a legend, print the layout and export the layout as a bitmap (see Layout editor : functionality).

Technical information:

A map view consists of an ASCII object definition file (.MPV). This file stores references to all map names that were stored as the map view and further contains the display options of all layers. Furthermore, the georeference of the map window is stored.

By opening the properties of a map view, you can see on the Contains tab, all maps and the annotation text layers that are part of this map view. Grid lines and graticules are not listed. For more information, see the Map View Properties sheet.
