Container objects

Container objects are collections of data objects. Container objects in its simplest form are (ASCII) lists with references to the object definition files of the data objects they contain. Container objects themselves thus do not store the data files of data objects. Some extra information may be stored by container objects as well.

Container object are:

map lists

containing raster maps

object collections

containing a subset of your data or the results of importing an Aster image

map views

containing a raster map and/or one or more polygon, segment and point maps, grid lines and graticules

layouts

containing one or more map views and other annotation

annotation text

containing multiple texts, e.g. labels of polygons, segments or points

graphs

containing graphical display settings for values in columns

In ILWIS 3, object names comply with Windows long file names.

Furthermore, it is not allowed to use % in any ILWIS object name.

In dialog boxes, long object names can be used freely.

On the command line and in scripts however, object names must be enclosed by single quotes e.g. 'My Object'.ext when the object name:

Furthermore, in ILWIS 3, Universal Naming Convention (UNC) paths are supported. A UNC path starts with \\ServerName\... rather than with DriveLetter:\...

Tips:

  1. To hide or show certain object types from a Catalog, use the Catalog - Show command, Object Selection toolbar or the Customize Catalog, Object Selection tab.
  2. To copy, rename or delete ILWIS objects, you MUST use ILWIS commands.
  3. For more information, see How to copy objects or How to delete objects.

  4. Mind: It is strongly discouraged to copy, rename or delete files using Windows Explorer or DOS.
