Copy a selected part of a table to the clipboard.

You can copy a single selected field, a block of selected fields, a selected column or a sequence of selected columns, a selected record or a sequence of selected records, or the whole table. Furthermore, you can copy selected parts of the statistics pane to clipboard.

You can then paste this into (part of) another or into the same ILWIS table, or into a database, a spreadsheet, a word processor, a desktop publishing system, etc.

To copy:

Make a selection, and:

• choose Copy from the Edit menu,
• click the Copy button in the toolbar,
• press the Ctrl+C keys on the keyboard, or
• click the selection with the right mouse button, and choose Copy from the context-sensitive menu.

Tips:

• You can use Windows' Clipboard Viewer (clipbrd.exe) to inspect the current contents of the clipboard.
• To clear a selection, press Esc on the keyboard, or click in the white space of a table.

To copy selected fields:

1. Select the fields you wish to copy:
• To select a single field: click the single field you wish to copy.
• To select multiple fields in sequence:
• drag a rectangle over the block of fields you wish to copy,

or

• click the first field you wish to copy,
• then press the Shift key and hold it down, and
• select the last field of a sequence of fields that you wish to copy.
2. Use one of the Copy methods described above.

The value(s) of the selected field(s) will be copied to clipboard.

The example below shows some copied fields of the Cityblock table:

To copy one or more selected columns:

1. Select the column(s) you wish to copy:
• To select a single column: click the column header of the column you wish to copy.
• To select multiple columns in sequence:
• click the first column of a sequence of columns you wish to copy,
• then, press the Shift key on the keyboard and hold it down, and
• click the last column of a sequence of columns that you wish to copy.
2. Use one of the Copy methods described above.

The column name(s), and the values of all fields of the selected column(s) will be copied to clipboard.

Tip: Before copying a number of columns, you may wish to first re-order your columns. To change the position of a column in the table, drag a column header to a new position. The mouse pointer will change into a column icon while dragging.

The example below shows (part of) two copied columns of the Cityblock table; see that column names are included:

To copy one or more selected records (rows):

1. Select the records you wish to copy:
• To select a single record: click the record button of the record you wish to copy.
• To select multiple records in sequence:
• keep the left mouse button down while moving over the record buttons of the records that you wish to copy,

or

• click the first record button of a sequence of records that you wish to copy,
• press the Shift key on the keyboard and hold it down,
• click the last record button of a sequence or records that you wish to copy.
2. Use one of the Copy methods described above.

The record name(s) or the record number(s), and the values of all fields in the selected record(s) will be copied to clipboard.

Tip: Parts of the Statistics pane can be copied to clipboard in the same way as copying records of the table.

The example below shows five copied records of the Cityblock table; see that record names (cityblock identifiers) are included:

To copy the whole table:

1. Choose Select All from the Edit menu.
2. Use one of the Copy methods described above.

The column name(s), the record name(s) or the record number(s), and the values of all fields in the table will be copied to clipboard.

The example below shows (part of) the whole copied table Cityblock table; see that column names and record names (cityblock identifiers) are included:

Tip: To copy an entire table window as a bitmap to the clipboard, including window borders, title bar, menu bar, toolbar, statistics pane, etc., press the Alt+PrintScrn keys on the keyboard.

Format in clipboard:

Copied fields are available in the clipboard:

• in text format,
• consecutive fields in a single record are separated by tabs,
• consecutive records start on a new line,
• in enhanced metafile format (i.e. the table view as a picture).

Furthermore, the clipboard will also contain:

• column names, if one or more columns were copied,
• record names or record numbers, if one or more records were copied,
• column names, and record names or record numbers, if the whole table was copied.

Tips:

• When pasting into a word processor, you may convert the pasted text into a table while separating at tabs.
• When pasting into a spreadsheet, any column names and/or record names or record numbers available in the clipboard will appear in the spreadsheet.
• To paste the picture format into a word processor or a spreadsheet, use Paste Special.
• When pasting into an ILWIS table, any column names and/or record names or record numbers available in the clipboard will be skipped; thus only the 'values' of copied fields will be pasted.
