Create a sample set

A sample set must be created before you can start sampling. A sample set is required for a multi-spectral image classification. During sampling, class names are assigned to groups of pixels with similar spectral values that are supposed to represent a known feature on the ground. The sampled pixels are also called training pixels. A sample set thus stores locations of sampled pixels and the assigned class names.

This dialog box appears when creating a new sample set:

Dialog box options:

Sample Set Name:

Type a new name for the sample set.

Description:

Type a description for the sample set. The description of a sample set appears in the title bar of the sample set editor when adding training pixels to the sample set. Further, the description is visible on the status bar of the Main window when moving the mouse pointer over the sample set in the Catalog.

Domain:

Select an existing class domain which contains the class names that you want to use during sampling (open the list box by clicking it), or create a new class domain by clicking the little create button .

Map List:

Select an existing map list (open the list box by clicking it), or create a new map list by clicking the little create button .

The map list will be shown as in interactive color composite; you can locate your training pixels on this color composite. If you wish to locate training pixels on another map, you have to add that map to the map window yourself.

Values of the maps in the map list at the position of training pixels, are used to calculate sample statistics during sampling (to ensure coherent spectral values per class), and are the basis on which a classification is performed in a later stage.

Next dialog boxes:

When creating a new class domain, the Create domain dialog box appears.

When creating a new map list, the Create map list dialog box appears.

When your graphics board is configured to use more than 256 colors, for instance High Color 16-bit or True Color 24-bit, the Display Options - Map list as color composite dialog box appears, in which you can select the bands/maps in your map list from which an interactive color composite will be created. This color composite will be used as a background during sampling. You can easily change bands and stretch intervals of the interactive color composite during sampling by changing the Display Options of the map list: click the right mouse button in the sample editor and select the map list from the context-sensitive menu.

When your graphics board is configured to use 256 colors: a warning will appear.

When everything is OK, the Sample set editor is started.
