Create a raster map

Usually, a raster map is created by other means, namely by rasterizing an existing point, segment or polygon map. The option you chose here is to create a new raster map from scratch: you are expected to assign all IDs, class names or pixels values to all pixels yourself.

This dialog box appears when creating a new raster map:

Dialog box options:

Map name:

Type a new name for the raster map.

Description:

Type a description for the map. The description of a map appears in the title bar when the map is displayed. Further, the description is visible on the status bar of the Main window when moving the mouse pointer over the map in the Catalog.

Georeference:

Select a georeference for the raster map; open the listbox by clicking it. Or create a new georeference by clicking the create button.

When you work with multiple maps of the same area, you should use the same georeference for all these maps.

Domain:

Select a domain for the map; open the list box by clicking it. Or create a new domain by clicking the create button : the Create Domain dialog box follows. A domain contains the set of valid IDs, class names or values in a map.

When creating more maps of the same theme, or when creating maps that contain the same class names, IDs or values as an existing map, select the same domain as used before. You can always add extra class names or IDs to an existing class or ID domain. Not every class name, ID or value present in a domain, needs to be used in the maps that use that domain. A representation can be linked to a domain, so that maps using the same domain can be displayed with the same colors.

Value Range:

In case you selected a value domain, type the minimum and maximum values of this domain or accept the default value range.

Precision:

In case this value domain uses decimals, type a value for the precision of this domain or accept the default precision.

The Pixel editor is opened: assign class names, IDs or values to the pixels in the map.

Additional information:

Georeference: You should only create a new georeference when this is the only raster map or the first raster map of a series of raster map in one area. When you already have raster maps of the same area, you should select the georeference of the existing maps.

Domain: The domain of a raster map defines the kind of codes that are used to name the pixels:
