Create a georeference corners

during Rasterize

Create a new georeference corners when rasterizing a point, segment or polygon map. The georeference determines the relation between row and column numbers in the output raster map and XY-coordinates.

This dialog box appears when in a dialog box of a Rasterize operation, you clicked the create georeference button.

When you want to perform overlay operations with the output raster maps in a later stage, it is strongly advised that all raster maps of the same area use the same georeference. In most cases, it is therefore sufficient to create a georeference corners only once.

Dialog box options:

Georeference name:

Type a new name for the georeference corners.

As one georeference should be used for multiple raster maps of the same size and of the same area, it is advised to enter a georeference name that applies to all maps (e.g. the name of the study area).

Description:

Type a description for the georeference. The description is visible on the status bar of the Main window when moving the mouse pointer over the georeference in the Catalog.

Coordinate system:

Accept the default coordinate system of the vector maps.

Pixel size:

Type a pixel size for the new raster map. When you specify for instance 20, the size of each pixel in the raster map will be 20 x 20 m.

Map boundaries:

When you selected an input vector map in the previous Rasterize dialog box, the boundary Xmin, Ymin, Xmax, Ymax values of the input vector map are already filled out. This is usually a good starting point for a georeference corners.

When you did not select an input vector map in the previous Rasterize dialog box, while in this dialog box you did select a coordinate system, the boundary Xmin, Ymin, Xmax and Ymax values of the coordinate system are already filled out.
Accept these defaults or type the minimum and maximum X and Y values for the georeference yourself.

Centers:

Select this check box if the four boundary values (Xmin, Ymin, Xmax, Ymax) of this map should refer to the centers of the four corner pixels of the map.
Clear this check box if the four boundary values should refer to the outer corners of the four corner pixels of this map.

Tips:

  1. This dialog box asks for minimum and maximum map boundary values and for a pixel size. This determines the number of rows and columns for the output raster map and thus the total number of pixels in that raster map.
  2. It is a good idea to spend some time thinking over the right pixel size for your work:
